Cost of living: Mexico vs the United States
What a Texas household actually spends less on — and what does not get cheaper — when the life moves to the Riviera Maya.
Mexico is cheaper on groceries, meals, and rent. Texas still pays more. The move works when your income stays in dollars and your life does not try to recreate Houston inside a tourist corridor.
Figures checked 5 October 2026. Price indexes are crowd-sourced snapshots, not official statistics. They move with the peso, the season, and who reports. Use them as a direction, then build a household budget.
The country, first.
Numbeo’s country comparison, updated in late September 2026, puts everyday costs in Mexico about 37% below the United States, before rent. Including rent, Mexico is about 43% lower. Rents themselves are reported about 55% lower. Restaurants and groceries sit roughly 39% and 36% lower.
The same index says local purchasing power in Mexico is about 68% lower. That is the sentence most “cheap Mexico” posts skip. If you earn a Mexican salary, the discount is smaller than it looks. If you keep a U.S. pension, remote salary, or investment income, the discount is the point.

Texas to this coast.
A February 2026 Numbeo city pair is clearer for the households we speak with. Dallas, excluding rent, was about 52% more expensive than Playa del Carmen. Including rent, Dallas was about 69% higher. Rents in Dallas were more than double. Groceries were about 64% higher; restaurants about 48% higher.
CityCost’s September 2026 estimate for one person with rent was about $1,265 a month in Playa del Carmen and about $2,769 in Houston. A couple with rent: about $2,314 versus $3,972. A family of three with rent: about $3,362 versus $5,176. A one-bedroom in the center: about $1,061 versus $1,705.
Playa del Carmen versus Houston — CityCost, September 2026
| Household | Playa del Carmen | Houston |
|---|---|---|
| One person, with rent | About $1,265 / month | About $2,769 / month |
| Couple, with rent | About $2,314 / month | About $3,972 / month |
| Family of three, with rent | About $3,362 / month | About $5,176 / month |
| 1-bedroom, city center | About $1,061 / month | About $1,705 / month |
These are aggregator estimates. A beach condo with American appliances and daily air-conditioning will sit above the Playa average. A walkable local neighborhood will sit below it.
Where the saving holds.
Food you buy in Mexican shops, weekday restaurants, household help, and routine private medical visits are usually the first things people notice. A car is optional in parts of Playa; it is not optional in most of Dallas–Fort Worth.
Property tax, once you own, is typically a small municipal charge compared with a Texas tax bill. The exact predial depends on the municipio and the cadastral value — ask the notary for the figure on a specific house rather than using a blog average.
Where it does not.
Electricity with heavy air-conditioning can surprise a Texas household used to a different climate and a different utility structure. Imported brands, wine, and “the same cereal as home” erase a grocery discount quickly.
International school fees, if you need them, can dominate a family budget. Short-term tourist rentals in peak season are not a cost-of-living number. And the peso moves. A strong peso makes Mexico feel less cheap in dollars; a weak peso does the opposite.
A calmer way to budget.
Keep two columns: life in Mexico, and the U.S. costs that do not die when you leave — health insurance that still covers you, a house you have not sold, storage, and travel home.
Then add a third column for the first year only: flights to look, a temporary rental, closing costs if you buy, and the quiet month when the container is late. The first year is not the lifestyle. It is the move.
Questions.
Can a couple live well on $3,000 a month?
Some do, away from the beach and without a car or international school. CityCost’s couple estimate with rent was about $2,300 in Playa in September 2026. A comfortable coastal life with a better apartment, dinners out, and travel home usually wants more. Build your own list.
Is Cancún cheaper than Playa del Carmen?
Numbeo’s 2026 city indexes put Cancún in a similar band to other mid-sized Mexican cities — cheaper than most of Texas, not the cheapest city in Mexico. The tourist strip and the residential neighborhoods are different markets. Compare the street you would actually live on.
Will I save if I still earn a U.S. salary?
That is the usual case we see. The Numbeo gap is largest when income stays in dollars and spending happens here. If both income and spending become Mexican, the local purchasing-power figure matters more than the grocery discount.
